Throughout a single day, we make many journeys and, often, we don’t make them in the same way. We walk, cycle, drive, park, take a taxi or combine different options. Our mobility adapts to what we need at any given moment.

Getting from one place to another increasingly means connecting different ways of travelling, and SMOU has become the go-to app for bringing them together and making journeys simpler.

A day full of journeys

Mobility is part of almost every moment of our day. Some journeys are predictable and part of our routine. Others arise unexpectedly and require us to change our plans, route or mode of transport.

Usage data from the SMOU services platform reflects this activity. During 2026, the app recorded an average of 73,000 transactions every day.

These represent thousands of mobility moments which, taken together, paint an increasingly diverse picture: we do not travel in just one way, but choose different options depending on the journey, the moment and our needs.

When the journey changes, so does the way we travel

Perhaps in the morning you use Bicing to get to work. Later, you need to drive and park on the street. Then, in the evening, you prefer to take a taxi home. Or perhaps your day starts in Castelldefels and ends in L’Hospitalet.

Combining different services is becoming increasingly common. In fact, almost 20% of people who use the SMOU app as part of their everyday travel already combine more than one service.

This figure highlights a clear trend: mobility is not static. It changes throughout the day and adapts to each situation.

Mobility is becoming increasingly metropolitan

Our journeys do not stop at administrative boundaries. We live, work, study and socialise across different municipalities, making metropolitan mobility an increasingly important part of everyday life.

It is in this context that SMOU is evolving into a metropolitan app, bringing together different mobility services in one place and gradually expanding its presence to more municipalities.

For example, the 'Parking meter' service is already available in 18 municipalities across the metropolitan area, making it easier for a single app to accompany us even when our journey extends beyond Barcelona.

Because when we travel, we focus on what we need at that moment: getting to work, going shopping, returning home or connecting with other places.

Many ways to get around

Each service responds to a different moment and need. 'Bicing' is currently the service with the highest number of transactions on SMOU, averaging more than 55,000 daily uses, while 'Parking meter' reaches the largest number of users, with more than 900,000 people having the service activated.

But beyond the figures, all this data tells the same story: there is no single way to get around.

Some days we cycle. Other days we drive. Sometimes we need to park, while at other times we prefer a taxi. And there are also days when we combine several options to complete a single journey.

This European Mobility Week, we want to highlight this way of travelling: more connected, integrated, shared and sustainable, helping to build a healthy and forward-looking Barcelona.

Because getting around is about more than simply reaching a destination, it is about finding the best way to do it.
