The personal mobility services application, SMOU, now allows users of private vehicles to consult information about the location and services of half of the car parks in Barcelona. There are a total of 300 car parks, which is double the number from a year ago when this feature was introduced through an agreement between the Ajuntament de Barcelona and the Gremi de Garatges de Barcelona i Provínicia.
In total, the SMOU app provides information about 80,000 off-street parking spaces, a 78% increase compared to a year ago.
Additionally, SMOU also includes real-time information on the availability of off-street parking spaces. Currently, there are 100 car parks in the city that offer this service.
According to Laia Bonet, the First Deputy Mayor and President of BSM, "the progress we are making in this project, in which BSM and the Gremi de Garatges de Barcelona i Província are involved, is a clear example of how public-private collaboration can help us address the major challenges that the city faces. In a compact city like Barcelona, parking facilities play a significant role in mobility. Supporting the digitization of the sector is key and directly impacts aspects such as planning our routes and reducing the time we spend searching for parking, which has a direct impact on public space utilization and pollution."
A technological solution that promotes planned and sustainable mobility
The information and availability features allow private vehicle users to, through their smartphones, find out which car park with available spaces is closest to their destination. This enables route planning and simplification, reducing parking search time, road traffic, public space occupancy and pollution.
Users can access detailed information for each parking facility, including the address of access points, operating hours, accepted vehicle types, available spaces, rates, a list of services offered at the parking facility, and information regarding the height and maximum width for access to the parking facility.
In the case of available parking spaces, real-time information is intuitively displayed on the application's map from the parking location itself. The information is conveyed through a traffic light indicator that provides the necessary information for users to decide where to park easily and immediately.
Additionally, to optimize private vehicle travel planning to the fullest, SMOU has introduced the option "I want to park near my destination" along with the "How to get there" feature. This new functionality displays the locations of parking facilities nearest to the destination and redirects the route to the chosen option.

As a new feature, SMOU now offers parking operators in Barcelona and its metropolitan area the opportunity to incorporate the app as a means of payment for parking by the minute at their parking facilities. This way, it provides SMOU app users with easy and convenient access from selecting the parking lot to paying for their stay.
